Q: The pastel colors and the overall palette of the movie seem rather girly, but at the same time, the appeal of film is universal. How did you succeed that balance?

A: We never thought our colors as girlish or boyish ; it was never driven by gender. A lot of the references we used was pastel photography. If you search pastel photography on Instagram, you’re gonna get all these hits, and I think that aesthetics is characteristic of that generation. It’s kind of an homage to the 90s. It’s just what people were into at that time, and this is something that we still are into. We really love this aesthetic, and it also makes us feel like this is what we would have been into at 13 as well, and it’s the perfect way to depict an innocent young girl’s world.

We also needed emotionally to go somewhere color-wise. So, we started out in this innocent mode. Meilin’s very confident, she knows who she is, and we start out very peaceful, very pastel, very low-contrast. I thought it supported who she was as a character. But then as she evolves, we can start punching up the contrast, the saturation, and when you get to third act, you have some very high contrast, with very dark colors. The pastels are no longer pastels, they’re extremely saturated and in your face. For us, it was also a storytelling tool, to make sure that the audience subconsciously gets that the colors are supporting this excitement and tension.

Q: How did you get so accurate in terms of reconstructing the 2000s?

A: A lot of our research happened as we invited everybody to go back and bring up their yearbook photos. So, we had these boards of everybody’s 13-year-old pictures. People brought in their yearbooks and we were just looking at yearbook photos, what clubs they were part of, what musical instruments they played. And if you were a mom or a dad, you could bring in pictures of your kids. Our graphic director Laura Meyer’s daughter actually made a music video to, I think, NSYNC or something, and she brought that in. People tried to connect to the film any way they could, because we either have all been there before or we have people that were there right now. That’s kind of where our references initially went from. Then we searched on Google and Getty images to make sure that we’re not getting references of kids from now but of kids of the time. For instance, none was using smartphones then, everybody was using cellphones and maybe even pagers. There’s also the type of backpacks people had, the types of pencils and pens kids would use back then… All kind of things that were specific to that time.

Things I find on the internet

The ‘Monsters, Inc.’ gag – where Mike is always covered by something. It’s the cherry on top for his character.

Genius Loci (2020) – I believe it is Oscar nominated, but I love how this animation is painted with the most simplest and thinnest lines.

Drawing my Dad

So, I asked my Dad to do various poses with certain expressions. I wanted to see if I could emulate these expressions and have the images to look like they came from the same person. I think that is what I find difficult, a character changing expressions or anticipation. My linear drawings are quite bold and are straight to the point, but my paintings are very suggestive. I like the suggestive-ness of these images and wonder if the paintings itself could lean into animation.

My Dad, Flatbrush and Technical Pencil on Procreate (2021)

Texture vs Line

The original line drawing is simplistic but allows for suggestion, I wouldn’t say it’s flat – but, I find it difficult to understand a change of expression or the head at different angles. The painting allows for the imagery to have some depth and possible movement. I feel this would work as I really like this style and it might be refreshing to animate.

Life Drawing 001

Debaser Nib on Procreate, 2021

This was my first experience at online life drawing at CSM. It was a very new experience, at first I wasn’t fond of the structure of the sessions – as they were very long winded. Vanessa’s sessions were absolutely amazing and me to look at the line of action in movements. I would however, like a more realistic way of moving – so I could replicate that in my animations.

Exhibition: ‘Black’, The Cartoon Museum

Exhibition: ‘Black’ was held at the Cartoon Museum which had recently been moved. It was a very small exhibition but it definitely made an impact. Written by Tobias Taitt and illustrated by Anthony Smith, the autobiographical graphic novel allowed for a different style.

I really enjoyed this exhibition. The Cartoon Museum is quite small, so it was an intimate exhibition within a small room.

Text from website:

‘Celebrating Black History Month, this powerful new exhibition explores the story and world of BLACK – the unflinching but uplifting new graphic memoir by writer Tobias Taitt and cartoonist Anthony Smith.

When Tobias was three, his mother killed his uncle. She was sent to prison, condemning him to spend his early life in a series of bleak institutions across rural England. As a black youth growing up in 1970s Britain, Tobias learned first-hand that the world could be a cold and uncaring place for a child of the state. But he also learned to navigate the system – and eventually to fight back against it.

When Tobias discovered life outside the institutions that held him, so began his involvement with the world of crime. Yet at the same time, a love of literature, with all its possibilities, grew within him.

With words by Tobias and illustrations by Anthony Smith, BLACK tells the uncompromising true story of Tobias’s life. Displaying 24 original pen and ink illustrations and video narration from Tobias, this intimate new exhibition invites visitors to experience a powerful and personal encounter with the art, story and people behind this remarkable graphic novel.

Exhibition: ‘Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser’, The V&A

This exhibition was quite astounding, it showed various worlds that derived from one story: ‘Alice and Wonderland.’ The photos below show just a glimpse of the artwork developed for the multiple media outlets for the story. It was interesting to see how designers, artists and animators depict the main characters of the story. The exhibition was laid out in a theatrical way, the high ceilings and vast space led to a very interactive exhibition, which also included projections and VR. It began with the traditional elements of ‘Alice and Wonderland’, introducing the printing plates for the book. I found this quite intriguing as the words described were also being used in a visual way. The rooms led to a ‘modern’ Alice, the character designs were quite clean and bold using singular bright colours.

Compilation of videos taken at the ‘Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser’ Exhibition

I really enjoyed the animations in this exhibition. They not only showcased the well known Disney animated feature on a large projection but displayed the artwork behind the film. Installations were included as a path to another room, it was almost like rippled canvas hanging from the ceiling with projected images of illustrations from the original book. Although, this installation was static and not animated – it allowed me to think the way we view information can come into play when planning an animation. The installations in this exhibition enlightened my perspective on how my animated film or animations could possibly be viewed or interactive.

My favourite installation was the animations that were projected onto the table and table cloth. There was a voice over narrative and sound that allowed me to be fully immersed in the installation. It just made me wonder if I could project an interactive animation.

From photography to films posters, the world of the character is so internationally well known that it is open to so much interpretation both artistically and imaginatively. I feel this exhibition really covered the world of ‘Alice and Wonderland’.

FILM ANALYSIS: ‘The Maker’

‘The Maker’ is such a glorious film – in my opinion – it gives a beautiful story to such an odd character. The premise of this short film is essentially ‘time’ – how do we use the time we have to have the best possible outcome?

I first watched this short film on amazon, I have always been intrigued with stop motion. The character is somewhat endearing yet strikingly unattractive. The audience is stricken with the character’s fish like shiny eyes and misaligned teeth. We question the branding on the forehead and correlate this to instruments belonging to an orchestra.

FILM ANALYSIS: ‘Into the Spiderverse’

Into the Spidervese has to be one of my all time favourite animated films. The fact that the ‘Spider-Man’ character is so well known and has been seen in many different lights, allows for the character to have more depth and reasoning behind their actions.

The mesh of 2D and 3D animation is truly a glorious thing. I was amazed at this film, because I hadn’t seen a clear mesh between 2D and 3D animation before.

Besides the obvious amazing visuals, the storyline was quite refreshing – other than the typical ‘Spiderman’ story. Miles Morales, as a young Spiderman offers a better representation for Spiderman.
